History of World Bipolar Day

World Bipolar Day is observed every year on March 30—the birthday of Vincent Van Gogh, who is believed to have lived with bipolar disorder. The event was first conceived as a global collaboration between organizations such as the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD), the International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF), and other mental health advocates, with the goal of raising worldwide awareness about bipolar disorder and eliminating the stigma that often surrounds mental illnesses.

By aligning World Bipolar Day with Van Gogh’s birthday, organizers pay tribute to the artist’s enduring legacy and highlight the powerful connection between creativity and mental health. Initially launched to encourage open conversations on bipolar disorder, the event has grown into a broader movement that fosters understanding, promotes access to resources, and celebrates the resilience of individuals living with bipolar. Each year, World Bipolar Day brings together mental health professionals, nonprofit organizations, caregivers, and people with lived experiences to share stories, offer education, and cultivate communities of support.
